A Box of Rimes - Short Vowels & A Box of Rimes - Long Vowels
Each box contains 50 cards featuring a rime and its 'family' of words.
E.g. Short Vowels: ush rush mush hush brush etc Long Vowels: ice mice dice nice price etc
The use of colour assists students in seeing the spelling pattern and matching it to what sounds they hear.
On the reverse side of the card there are 2 sentences, each of which incorporates at least two of the words from the rime 'family' list.
E.g.: ush If you rush you will slip in the slush. ice What price is that nice slice?
Uses: A Box of Rimes will promote the awareness of short and long vowel rime patterns. They provide students with practice in using analogy to decode at the word and sentence level. The teacher can use the cards to assess the students' knowledge of rime in spelling of words and dictated sentences.
Target Population: Primary students and older students with reading difficulty. They could also be used with adults.
